TODAY'S LOGISTICS & DELIVERY SYSTEMS

These days, when you want something delivered, there are many different ways to get it.

1.  You can have it shipped via a logistics company from most anywhere in the world and wait between 24 hours and a week to get it.

2. You can have a traditional courier or bicycle messenger service deliver it, although those are tailored for businesses, and they’re limited by where they can go and what they can carry.

3.  Then there are the new e-commerce delivery companies. Amazon Fresh and Yummy.com deliver their own groceries.  Shutl connects select retailers with local couriers. eBay’s new eBay Now and Google’s new Shopping Express both offer delivery from select local retailers (in San Francisco) in as little as an hour (eBay) or same-day (Google). You can use Delivery.com to connect with a local business that delivers, like a pizza place. Amazon Local Express Delivery uses logistics companies to deliver items on their website ordered in the morning by the end of the day. In all cases, though, you’re limited to select retailers.

4.  You can try new peer to peer delivery ventures, like TaskRabbit, who can connect you to a person with whom you can negotiate a price to accomplish a specific task, or like Exec, who will charge a flat hourly rate.

5.  And if you’re particularly wealthy, you can just hire a personal assistant to do your bidding.

Then there’s Consumeron – an affordable personal assistance-on-demand and delivery system that utilizes mobile telepresence, as if you’re in two places at once – with GPS tracking – to bring you anything, from anywhere, usually within 50 minutes.

Consider these scenarios:

  1. You’re a building contractor on a job site, and you need more materials from Home Depot immediately in order to finish the job.  Who do you call?

  2. You urgently need your prescription refilled, but aren’t able to collect it yourself.  Who will pick it up from the pharmacy for you?

  3. You’re having a dinner party, and the guests arrive in an hour.  You just realized you forgot to get wine, but you’re in the middle of cooking.  Who can pick out and buy the wine you need from your favorite wine shop ASAP?

  4. You live in Manhattan, and you need bulk goods.  You don’t have a car.  There’s a Costco in Harlem, but how can you get what you need from there to your apartment in Soho?

  5. Your dry cleaning is ready.  But you leave work at the same time the dry cleaner closes.  Is there someone who can pick it up before they close and meet you at home?
